A step by step guide to paying income tax return online
If you are also going to pay your ITR online, then you can do it easily by following some simple steps
Step 1: Login to the NSDL-TIN website.
Step 2: Click the e-payment icon.
Step 3: Select the appropriate challan which is ITNS 280 in the case of income tax payment.
Step 4: After selecting the challan, you will be redirected to the screen for entering the details given below.
- PAN for non-TDS payments
- Name and address of taxpayer
- Year of Assessment
- Major head code
- Minor head code
- Type of payment
After providing such details select the bank from the drop- down list.
Step 5: After furnishing all the required details, click the ‘Proceed’ button and a page with all your entries will be displayed for verification.
Step 6: Verify all the entered details and click “edit” button to make corrections. Once correction is complete click the “Submit” button which will take you to the online banking page of your chosen bank.
Step 7: Once you reach the online banking platform, log into your bank account with login id and password and pay the amount of tax that you are required to pay.
Step 8: Once the payment is successful, the paid amount will be deducted from your bank account and you get a confirmation receipt that can be printed and kept safe as a proof of the payment made. You will receive an acknowledgment with the CIN (Challan Identification Number) which can be used to track the status of your tax payment.

E-payment of Service Tax in India
From 1st January 2014, it has become mandatory for assesses who have paid more than one lakh rupees as service tax in the previous financial year to pay the service tax online. E-payment of service tax is very easy as it can be done easily, like online payment of income tax, through partner banks.
As for online payment of income tax, e-payment of service tax too can be done through online banking partner banks.
A step by step guide to filing Service Tax Online
Those who wish to file service tax should follow the instructions given below
Step 1: Log on to the NSDL-TIN website
Step 2: Click the e-payment icon.
Step 3: Once the page opens, enter your 15-digit Service Tax Registration Number as given by the Income Tax Department.
Step 4: Then enter the captcha code as shown on the NSDL website.
Step 5: Based on the input provided, your entered details will be verified. It will also check the authenticity of the registration number entered. If the verification is successful, your details as entered in the Assesses code master will appear on the screen.
Step 6: In the 6th step, you can select the accounting codes for which you are filing tax, followed by the service for which the tax is being filed.
Step 7: Then select the education cess as applicable.
Step 8: After that submit the above input details.
Step 9: After submission of your details, you will be asked to select the bank through which you want to make the payment.
Step 10: Select the bank name from the drop-down list and you will be taken to the bank’s website wherein you will log into your account using login id and password.
Step 11: Fill in the amount and make payment for service tax. As the payment is made successfully, your confirmation receipt along with Challan Identification Number will appear on the screen. Save a soft copy of it or take a print out for tracking and further reference.
Step 12: You can use the CIN to check the status of the e-payment of the service tax made by you.
Step 13: If you have paid an amount more than required as a service tax, then you can send a request to adjust it against the tax for the next fiscal. Alternatively, you can also make a request for return.
Frequently Asked Questions
While making e-payment for tax, please check whether the tax amount has been debited or not. In case it is not debited, then only you should try to make the payment once again, if the payment gets debited but an error is shown, you are required to contact your bank for furnishing the payment counterfoil.
