Looking to link Pan with Aadhaar? Do it through SMS

Those who have not linked their Aadhaar with their Permanent Account Number (PAN) can now do it easily as income tax department has given a facility to do it through SMS.

Advertisements regarding the same has been given in the leading national dailies. Now Aadhaar and PAN can be linked by sending SMS to either 567678 or 56161.

Besides, people can also use the income tax website to link PAN with Aadhaar. Those seeking a new PAN can fill their Aadhaar number in application form to get the new PAN allotted which will come linked with Aadhaar. If you are looking to reprint your PAN then you should quote Aadhaar in change request form used to reprint PAN.

The income tax department has said that linking these two numbers is essentials to ‘seamlessly avail online, a world of income tax facilities’.

The announcement has come at a time when several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court to challenge the constitutional validity of Aadhaar and making it mandatory for availing various social welfare schemes run by the government.

Earlier this month, the income tax department has launched an e-facility to link PAN with Aadhar. A link to connect two unique identities has also been given on department’s website. On this link you have to submit PAN, Aadhaar Number and name as written in the Aadhaar Card.  After getting confirmation from UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), this linking will be confirmed. In case of small mismatch in Aadhaar name, Aadhaar OTP will be required.

The government through the Finance Act 2017, has made it mandatory for taxpayers to quote Aadhaar or enrolment ID of their Aadhaar application while filing Income Tax returns (ITR).
