How to e-Verify Income Tax Returns on your own

Income Tax Return filed by the taxpayer is not regarded valid until the point it is verified by the taxpayer. In the current procedure, the taxpayer can check the return utilizing Digitally Signed Authentication or by sending signed ITR-V to Centralized Processing Centre. According to Rule 12 vide Notification No. 41/2015, Income Tax department has introduced e-Verification of returns as a substitute to ITR-V. Taxpayers who are not using digital signatures can e-verify their returns. 

E-verifications  mode

Income tax department provides the option to e-verify the returns at the time of uploading as well as after uploading. In the case of already uploaded returns, the tax payer has the option to e-verify the same by going through the following step “e-file e-verify return” option right after login. Taxpayers have the option to verify the return by using following modes also.

• EVC received in Registered Mobile number and e-mail. Electronic Verification Code (EVC) is a 10 digit alphanumeric code which can be generated through e-Filing portal and is valid for 72 hours.

• Via Aadhaar OTP

• Through Net Banking

• Through Bank Account Number

• Via using EVC through Demat Account Number

• Via using EVC through Bank ATM

Steps to e-verify the returns

1. Login to the e-filing portal

2. Click on the “e-file” option and from there select option of “Upload Return” option to upload a return.

3. Then select the assessment year, ITR name from the drop down menu and then browse the XML to be uploaded and then click on the submit button.

4. After doing all these steps now taxpayer will have the four option in front of them that are:

Option 1 – “I already have an EVC to e-Verify my return.”

Option 2 – “I do not have an EVC and I would like to generate EVC to e-Verify my return.”

Option 3 – “I would like to generate Aadhaar OTP to e-Verify my return.”

Option 4 – “I would like to send ITR-V/ I would like to e-Verify later.”

Let us go in some detail and know each option one by one

Scenario 1 – “I already have an EVC to e-Verify my return.”

Step 1- Taxpayer need to click on “I already have an EVC to e-Verify my return” options

Step 2- Taxpayer is required to enter the pre generated EVC in the provided text box and Click “Submit” button to e-Verify.

Step3 - A success message will be displayed. No further action is required. All your work is done be happy.

Scenario 2- How to generate EVC through Bank ATM

Step 1 - Taxpayer is required to go to the nearest Bank ATM.

Step 2 - Taxpayer needs to swipe the ATM card and enter the ATM PIN, the users are provided with an extra option of “PIN FOR INCOME TAX FILING”

Step 3 - The user should select the option “PIN FOR INCOME TAX FILING” for receiving EVC.

Step 4 - EVC will be sent to the taxpayer’s registered mobile number and on registered e-mail Id.

Step 5 - Taxpayer is required to login to e-Filing Portal and then to click on “e-File” button followed by “Upload Return” option to upload a return.

Step 6 - After uploading the return, the user should select “I already have an EVC to e-Verify my return”

Step 7 - Taxpayer is required to enter the pre generated EVC in the provided text box and Click “Submit” button to e-Verify.

Step 8 - A success message will be displayed. No further action is required.  

Scenario 3- How to generate EVC through net banking

Step 1- Click on the option “EVC – Through Net Banking”

Step 2- Click on “Continue” button then Taxpayer is logged out of e-Filing portal and will be redirected to the list of banks available for Net Banking Login facility

Step 3- Login to e-Filing through Net Banking.

Step 4- Click on the option of “e-Verify” link.

Step 5- Confirm to e-Verify by clicking on Continue button then a success message will be displayed. No further action is required, you are done.

Scenario 4- how to generate EVC through Demat account

Step 1- Go to My Account section after login into your account and click it. 

Step 2 – Click generate EVC from the dropdown list.

Step 3 - You will be served with 4 options from where you should select the fourth options that reads Generate EVC through Demat Account Number.

 Step 4 – You will be asked to pre-validate your Demat account number.

Step 5 – Provide the details and pre-validate it.

Step 6 - Once pre-validated you will be asked whether or not you want to generate EVC. Click yes.

Step 7 – EVC will be generated.   Now e-verify your income tax returns.
